Yellowstone Wolf: Tracking the Packs

Yellowstone's wolf packs—Grayling Creek

The Grayling Creek pack formed in 2009 when a female from the Cougar Creek pack (632F) joined two males that dispersed from the Gibbon Meadows pack (687M and 647M). The alpha female (632F) had previously been nicknamed “Tripod” because an unknown injury had left her missing one of her hind legs below the hock. After breeding successfully and rearing two pups, alpha female 632F died late in 2009. The alpha male (647M) continued to lead the pack until he was struck by a vehicle and killed in 2011. By 2011, it was unknown if the pack remained intact outside the western border of the park or disbanded entirely.
